Value of Holiday Barbies Collection

I've searched and searched for answers to this, but found that there is no blue book for Holiday Barbies.
So this guide is based on not only personal experience, but also based on those Holiday Barbies sold at true Auction Houses!

This is a full list, including pictures, of each Holiday Barbie ever available and it's true value. (Up to date!)
Use this the next time you decide you're going to purchase a Holiday Barbie to know if you're getting a good deal or being ripped off!

Here's a helpful guide to determine which one you might have and it's worth!

  • Mint In Box (MIB) = The plastic is clear, there are no tears to the box, looks as good as if it just left the factory!
  • Never Removed From Box (NRFB) = The Barbie is still inside the box, but the box isn't Mint.  There might be some yellowing to the plastic and the glue holding the plastic top and bottom might be losing it's grip.  Overall General shelf wear.
  • Damaged Box = There is significant damage to the box but the Barbie is still attached inside.  The damage can be anywhere between a tear or cut in the front plastic, the cardboard box being crushed completely or the top or bottom plastic holders are missing.
  • Removed From Box but still Mint =  This is where the Box is completely gone but the Barbie has all her accessories (including her brush, stand and shoes!) and still looks as good as she was in the box.  Usually these Barbies are taken from the box and immediately placed in a display case for safe keeping.
  • Removed from Box = This Barbie is removed from her box but doesn't have all her accessories and may need some TLC to her hair as she was used for play, not for display.

  1. Hi There! Really happy to have found your website. I have the Holiday Barbies from 1990 to 2007 (missing 2003). Just wondering what you think these would worth as one set (minus the 2003 of course) Would they hold a higher value than if they were all individual in your opinion? Thanks for your advice!

  2. It really comes down to what condition they're in :)
If you have them all completely MIB you will probably collect a much higher amount on the entire set being sold then trying to do it individually as you will run into shipping costs. With USPS going up each year, you'll end up paying less shipping on all them being sold together then you would selling them individually. Therefore, you'd pocket more of a profit rather than trying to compete against other sellers who are willing to sell their 1997s for $10 with free shipping (the sellers pocket a mere $1-$2 after they're done with the shipping costs, eBay's fees and Paypal's fees...)

If you have some that are damaged I'd recommend trying to do a garage sale with the the damaged ones to try and get the full amount you can out of them and then putting the remaining MIB on eBay as a set. There are many sets out there with missing Holiday Barbies, but sometimes that's all people are looking for.

Example, someone like me likes to buy individually, if I can find a set from someone who can fill in all the missing Barbies without duplicating them, I'd be happy to go for that seller over the one who has the full set. :)

    I hope that helps ^_^

  4. I am wondering the same thing as Debby. I went to try to sell twenty of my Barbies and would receive just what three of my Barbies are worth. I know how much they are worth, I would like to try to get close to their value.

  5. Well, if you're looking to sell locally you can always try and sell them at a yard sale or a garage sale. I personally look for these kind of Barbies when I'm out looking at yard sale or garage sales and rather then pay the shipping to buy it online where I can only see pictures, I'll gladly buy it from a person for the same price because I have a chance to directly inspect the Barbie and have it right there and then :)

    1. That one I'm not too familiar with, but I would recommend visiting eBay and looking her up and seeing what others are selling for (make sure you click on 'Sold listings' on the left hand side so you can actually see what people are paying for her, not just what people are pricing her at) :)

    1. If you're looking to 'give it away' I'd recommend going onto Facebook and seeing if your area has a local page dedicated for trading and selling items.
For example, my county has a page on facebook called the 'Stuff Sale' with our county's name attached to it and it's a closed list so only locals can join it and post their items. People make arrangements with each other to buy, sell, give away or even barter for other goods, it's also a great place to advertise a yard/garage sale if you're having one :)

  8. What would the whole collection fromm 88-present go for

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hmm, that is a tough one. The 2014 Holiday Barbie was JUST released, so if you're asking for a total price of 1988 to 2014 then I'd have to say it depends on the condition of all the Barbies. Each one would have to be properly looked at and priced and then you'd have to round the sum of them up.
Now if you have the FULL collection MIB, you can make a good amount, I've seen some listed for $10,000, but if you're missing one or one is damaged (out of the box) then you'd have a tougher time trying to price the collection... it eventually all comes down to 'which' one is damaged/missing... if it's the 1988 then I'm afraid the price would go down significantly, but if it's the 2014 or one of the mid 1990s Holiday Barbies then your price may only go down a few dollars :)

  9. Where is the best place to sell things!? I am looking on ebay and none these barbies are going for the prices listed above.

    1. eBay is a saturated market now a days, but I promise there are many going for the prices above but you just have to be patience in selling them.
Used to be you could list an item on eBay for whatever you wanted and it'd sell very very quickly, but because people are using eBay now to buy and sell everything and their mother (in a matter of speaking lol) you have a lot of competition to wade through... I've sold Barbies though for the prices I felt they deserved after a few months of listing it. You just have to remember to be patient, don't give away your Barbies just because someone else is listing theirs for next to nothing, you need to make something back and don't want to put yourself in the negative.
If you're not comfortable with eBay then you can look to Facebook for your local area, many Counties have their own 'Stuff Sale' facebook pages now where locals can buy/sell and trade and you might find yourself someone willing to pay anything for your Barbie :)
You can also try other websites like Etsy (although it is a craft sale page, you can sell other items too including your Barbies ^_^ )

  10. Hi! I'm really not a huge fan on Barbies but my aunt always just got them for me. I have the holiday collection from '93-'97 with only 3 of the boxes damaged and one out of the box but in mint condition. I would really like to sell them, they take up a lot of needed space. I was just wondering what the total price would be for them. Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I guess honestly it would depend on which ones are actually damaged or out of the box. The mid to late 1990s Barbies were, unfortunately, over produced. This was the age of the 'collections', like Beanie Babies and Pokemon Cards. Everyone was looking to make a quick buck, and that includes the companies that made them... and so they kept making them to try and squeeze every dollar they could out of them... and now everyone has one so the value (or market) crashed around this time... Now people are mainly only interested in the Barbies that have significant value, or are rare or are part of a full set, those are the ones that sell the quickest with the highest value.
If you're still looking to sell them then I'd recommend selling them in a set, it'll save you a ton in shipping costs (shipping costs have skyrocketed over the last decade) and then trying to price them accordingly and then combine the prices to get your worth that you want to sell them for. You might have to be patient as it does sometimes take a little to sell these years but you should eventually get someone who is looking to purchase these classics for themselves :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If I were in your shoes, I would definitely sell them as a whole, mainly because even though the first 5 are out of the box, they are still highly collectable and people may pay the price you're looking for just to get their hands on those 5 :)

    1. eBay is actually a very good indicator to get an idea of what you're looking at for each of them. Even though the market is saturated on eBay now a days, you can see what people are paying for items like these and many others by simply clicking on the 'Sold items' section on the left hand part of the page after you do a search for each of these. So you actually know what people are paying, not just what people are marking them up for.
After all, I can say I want $99 for each of those, it doesn't mean people are going to pay that amount, they'll only pay what they think the item is worth.

No one person decides what an item is worth, it depends on what people are willing to pay that makes the market what it is so certainly check eBay to get an idea of what they're worth :)

  13. The 2014 AA doll is totally out of line with the prices compared to the white doll. As an AA, and so is my friend, we think its racist, cruel and disrespectful to us AAs. Dont forget RACIST!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not really. The brunette is exclusive to one store, and thus worth more. The blonde and AA are the same. It depends on how many are produced.

      Delete
    2. I apologize that you think so but as Chrissy said, the brunettes are almost always exclusive to one store and therefore, much rarer then others which are produced at other stores.
Also, if you noticed, the 1991 AA is actually worth more then the white typical blonde. This is because even though they were sold together at the same store, unfortunately there weren't many purchased and so there were fewer produced so being over 3 decades old now, there aren't as many left making them worth more.

It's not racist, it's supply and demand that made the prices what they are. When they are over produced and everyone and their mother buys one, the value declines. When no one buys them or the stores don't order as many, when the season ends there is only a limited supply in existence and therefore the value goes up, this is how the world works on all vintage or collectable items :)

      Delete
  14. The more time goes on the more they are worth?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, as all collectables work :)

It all has to do with how many are left in the world really. As time goes on, those who have bought the Barbies and wish to keep them in good condition either lose them, someone destroys the Barbie or a natural disaster (like a fire) destroys the Barbie, someone passes away and sells the Barbie to someone who wants to give it to a child to play, etc, many things can happen, but the point is the number in existence becomes smaller and therefore the price goes up. But if you want the number to really sky rocket it has to get down to the last few thousand, after all the rarest Barbies released still have 1,000 others to compete with, but 1,000 is still a very, very small number

      Delete
    2. I beg to differ on this. I started collecting the holiday Barbies in 1994 and stopped after the 2012 doll (19 holiday Barbies, all mint in box) I began trying to sell all 19 dolls as a collection in June of 2013 on both eBay and Craigslist. To price them fairly both to myself and to the buyer I asked myself how much did I pay for my most expensive doll. My most recent dolls were priced at $45 (not including tax) from either Walmart or Target so, 19*45= $855. Technically this would be the most appropriate price... I mean I paid taxes... And while not all dolls were as much as $45 per doll, over the years, their value went up. Despite this, I was a little unfair to myself and priced each doll at $40 so, 19*40= $760. This was the original price I put for the collection on the two sites. I also put (multiple times and in CAPS) the dolls were only being sold as a set. I received multiple inquires on the dolls, all falling into 2 categories... 1) was (insert year here) for sale by itself? (REALLY?!) 2) why was the collection so expensive.... (SERIOUSLY REALLY?!) After a year of this pish posh and rubbish, I repriced the dolls at $35 a piece (an unfair price to myself seeing as I am not only losing the tax I paid on each AND all the years I held on to them, but that I was now not going to receive the base rate of what I paid for them) so 19*35= $665. I received more of the same 2 types of inquires... Here we are... Summer of 2015 and the collection. The entire, MINT collection, STILL has not sold for LESS than face value!!!! Sad but true.

Ergo while the idea that all collectibles should increase in value/price exists... It's not always applicable to all collectibles. Sadly this truth applies to Holiday Barbies.

  15. So, what is the standard production number? A rough guestimate !

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Honestly every year is based on Supply and Demand.
Mattel releases many dolls every year in every category. They usually fall under one of the four labels - Platinum, Gold, Black or Pink.

      - Platinum means there are only 1,000 produced (the highest priced Barbies out there)

      - Gold means there are only 5,000 produced

      - Black means they're special but will produce as many as stores request, but they will only do it for a very limited time (for the example the Hunger Games or Twilight Barbie series)

      - Pink Label means they will continue to produce them until they feel like not producing them.

The Holiday Barbies fall under the Pink Label. Yes it does have a bit of a time line, but even after the year ends and they stop producing their year's Holiday Barbie, they will continue to sell until their current stock is gone and it could be hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, it all depends on the current year's Supply and Demand. One year may have 500,000 produced, the next could have a mere 5,000 (highly unlikely). When the year ends, that supply and demand also, (obviously) has an effect on the value the Barbie takes on and of course, as time passes and more Barbies are lost to time, the value goes up. Even the classic Pokemon cards will eventually carry a large value again one day, it'll just take time for it to happen. ^_^

  16. I have a few questions about my 1997 Special Edition Happy Holidays Brunette Barbie. It has a gold background indicating that it was an early release. I have recently noticed that my Barbie has green eyes and green eye shadow which differs from the blue eyes and blue eye shadow on the box. I have read that this makes it more special and worth much more (price range of $1500-$2000). I am trying to get an estimate on how much it would be and hoped that anyone might know something about this. Thanks!

    1. Hello, I just noticed your post and wanted to contact you.
This was new to me, but I did do some research and spoke with a representative from Mattel on this doll and found out some information for you.
In regards to the error, the error isn't with the doll, it was with the insert.
The doll actually was intended to have Green Eyes, not the Blue, so it was a mere printing error. All dolls released were released with the Green Eyes in the 1997 series, even the special member's Blonde version.
This is similar to the 1998 Printing error, where the back of the box showed an entirely different outfit for the 1998 Holiday Barbie. There was never a recall, the issue was just fixed and new Barbies were issued.
Unfortunately though, because of how many were released, it did not change the value from those who didn't have the error because the error had to do with the Box, not the Doll.

If, for example, the issue was with the Doll, like if the 1998 Holiday Barbie was released with that very outfit on the back of the error boxes, or with Blue Eyes the 1997 Holiday Barbie box error showed, the value would have sky rocketed I'm sure in comparison, but the issue was with the box, not the doll so if you were to go online and search for these very Barbies with the error, you'd find them at the exact same price all around. You can try and sell them at a higher price and explain the Box Error to others when you're selling it, but you'll find that people are more interested in an error with the actual doll, then the box that it is in. I personally have the 1998 with the error and without the error on the box, I was not aware until you posted there was even an error with the 1997 Gold Box Holiday Barbie, but after searching other eBay listings with the same error, the price is the same either way and the people selling them are very aware of the error and there are many to choose from. There are (very likely) far less in existence, then those without, but there were still many thousand produced before the error was caught and no recall was done, so stores continued to sell those with the error and those without making the market value plunge with this year's release.

  19. I have all the barbies from 1988 to present. They were all MIB, but unfortunately our movers damaged the boxes in our move. I need to find someone to give me an appraisal for insurance adjuster, but the values I'm hearing do not match your estimates. Any suggestions for someone to contact who will help me get true value for damaged items?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Honestly I'm not exactly sure whom to contact who will give you these numbers. These numbers I came up with were through research of other's selling their barbies. An insurance adjuster will only give you a easy quick number to ensure they will sell almost immediately, which will be far less then these numbers unfortunately. People selling the barbies at these prices are selling them individually and by themselves. They are taking all the risk and the time to list them or find a buyer. It can take a bit of time to find the right buyer for some Holiday Barbies because of how many are in existence, the Platinum Barbies are much more prized than a simple Holiday Barbie.

So with that being said, if you're willing to take the time to find the buyer or list your Barbies on eBay or any other auction, then these are the prices you want to sell them at, but if you're looking to sell all your Barbies right NOW with outside help, the price will drop significantly.

Just take a moment and do a little bit of research and you'll find these prices will match just about what everyone else is looking to get at the very lowest. You can try listing even higher but the time it'll take to sell will increase as people are looking for deals, namely these prices or even lower nowadays. I hope that helps :)

    1. I would suggest Googling to see what others are selling the items for. I wish there was an actual Blue Book for Barbies but it doesn't seem there is so it all depends on how fast you'd like to sell them.

Comparing prices to eBay has helped me a lot with coming up with this list. As a seller myself on eBay, competition is everything. There are millions of people on eBay and just as many sellers so if you want to sell your items fast, you want to go lower then the lowest price available. If you don't mind waiting a little bit you can check what other items have sold for (not the listed price, you have to click on 'sold' in the left column and you'll see a list of sold Barbies and the prices they sold for) and try and grab close to or a little higher, or if you're looking for a much higher price you can list it higher if you'd like.

There's no limit to what you can list them for, it all depends on you and the buyer, how long you're willing to wait and what they're willing to spend. :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A lot of them do if you contact them about it. Most like to auction off items they found themselves in order to make a profit but if you contact them about having a full collection there will probably be some kind of fee to use their auction house to have the auction, much like eBay charges a Final Value fee, but there may be others that would just be happy to have the publicity of a large collection on auction as it would bring in customers for other auction items they're trying to sell themselves. I personally live in a very small town but we have 3 auction houses locally.
You could also try and sell the collection yourself online on eBay, Amazon, etc or look for a FaceBook sell page, (Most counties have one that's secluded to your local area) and that way you can negotiate prices that way and trade it off locally :)

    1. It is sad but true. These prices are based on a collection of prices I've gone through eBay and other auction sites/websites and my own local stores.

It is sad but these dolls usually are priced around the Holidays for about $45-$50 a piece, but it all depends on production in the end, what year the doll is, what the condition is... so many factors to consider.
The list isn't 'perfect' but it's about where people are selling them these days. For example the 2008 and 2009 are exceptional high, but there's a reason for it. These dolls were anniversary Holiday Barbies. The 2008 was the 20 year Anniversary for the Holiday Barbie series themselves, the 2009 Holiday Barbie was the 50th Anniversary for the Entire Barbie Collection, so on top of 'just' being a Holiday Barbie, it was also labeled for other significant which raised it's overall value. The 1994 Holiday Festival Barbie is also a prime example. Those dolls weren't sold at those prices, it was sold for next to nothing in comparison, but it was given out ONLY at the Festival, which means you had to be at that Festival to get one and they made even less of those compared a normal Platinum Barbie which makes a total of 1,000 (and they sell out within the FIRST hour these days when released, I was lucky to grab one myself this year but it was the most frustrating 50 minutes to get the order in as the website had so many buyers it kept crashing).
So although I'd love for the list to be higher in prices, this is what I am working with and this is what I am looking to pay per Barbie, although of course if you can make more for your collection or get a better deal when buying I say go for it because it's rare to find such prices! ^_^

  33. Hi, I just happen to come across this page & have been reading some posts/info & would like to offer some advice to help. I have been in the doll collecting business for almost 40 yrs. & have learned a lot over those years of dealing w/ buyers & sellers. Here are some tips to help you sell your collections.
1st & most important is to realize that it is VERY difficult to make a profit on Barbie dolls because the market on dolls has more ups & downs than a rollercoaster! A doll selling for $200 today, may not bring $20 next week & those that bought Barbie as an investment are going to be out of a lot of money!
While over production is a big reason, the main reason is that a huge amount of people started collecting for profit & mattel started flooding the market w/ all these special, store exclusive, limited editions w/ most not being limited at all & w/ a few exceptions like convention dolls, ultra high end & hard to find dolls; most dolls starting mid 80's are not worth much as they are easy to find nrfb.
The Xmas dolls from 89 to 2000's bring very little even nrfb you will be lucky to get $25 for most of them. The 88 one is worth the most & at 1 time was going for over a $1000 but that was many years ago & now most go for less than $200. There are a few others in this collection that will go for more than $25 like the 2009 as that was Barbie's 50th anni. that I have seen sell for as much as $65 along w/ a few of the newer ones like the store exclusive versions that will have a different color hair or dress than the others. I have always really liked the xmas dolls & LOVE the way they are packaged in boxes that look like display cases & are very nice for the price, unlike the really expensive ones that come in very plain boring boxes!
Speaking of boxes, a word of caution: If you are planning to sell any Barbie, keep them NRFB as just opening them can decrease their value by as much 75%!!
Here are class terms you need to know in order to make your listing correctly.

NRFB- means that you have not opened or broken any seals.
MIB- mean that while the doll has been opened or briefly removed, she has been put back into her box just as she came & doll & box are both mint.
Make sure you are very honest w/ both doll & box condition, listing every flaw, scratch, shelf wear, etc.. As Barbie collectors can be overly anal especially about the boxes as they want absolute (impossible) perfection!
Many times I questioned if they were collecting dolls or boxes, even complaining about packing peanut dust and/or finger prints! Also let them know if anyone smoked around your dolls because even if barely there, there will be those that make a huge issue over it.
As mentioned, ebay sets the market price on most collectibles as something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. For the most up to date values, you look at sold items most recent 1st to get the ave. price it is going for at this time. Using the highest or lowest sort for sold items is not accurate as many factors could be at play when the doll sold for $100 in sept. when now it is nov. however the highest price sort can show you the most it sold for which can help you to determine a bin or reserve price. Because if that doll was selling for $100 a month ago but is now selling for $70, you know there was this many people willing to pay that much, it may be possible to get that price again in the near future especially if the amount of dolls listed goes down.
Anyway hope this can help someone! Please don't hesitate to ask any questions about selling value or even buying. I also know collectors that may be looking for a doll you may have. Good luck!!

    1. Ebay is definitely not a reliable source for a price check. You can buy a phone case that is usually $60 in their regular retail store for $2 on ebay simply because the owner no longer wants or needs it. Although I must agree with you and say that being able to pay for college from the profits that come from selling these dolls is a bit far fetched.

      Delete
    2. It's not to fully pay for college of coarse, this is more of a fun way to collect and encourage a future college role for my children while providing a modest down payment for their education.
My daughter still has well over a decade before college is even in her grasp, so as time goes on, who knows what will change, prices, Barbies, whatever.

Of coarse half the Barbies aren't worth retail price anymore, you'll be lucky to find anyone willing to pay $50 for a 1990s Holiday Barbie, and that includes me, the point is to keep collecting, gather as many as possible and sell them as a full and complete set which would gather far more than any of them being sold individually at the rate they're going for.

  57. I notice a lot of comments here are from a lot of people trying to sell their collection of Holiday Barbies.

Just as a friendly reminder, this list above is a personal one I made myself with many hours of research to keep it as accurate as possible.

There is NO true Blue Book value of Holiday Barbies out there to date, this is strictly just me who has put this together for those looking to sell their Barbies and get the most reasonable dollar out there for them based on their year, condition and any other special indication.

I offer this guide as more of a self help for those looking to sell, and although I appreciate the many offers given here to me as well as other people looking to buy, to be quite honest you probably won't find a lot of 'Buyers' here. This page is found mostly by sellers looking to figure out what they should sell 'their' collection or individual barbies.

And for those who are very upset in regards to the prices because they've found out there are different ones at the moment they checked, please again, as many people have mentioned, including myself, use the 'SOLD' check box on eBay to see what people are ACTUALLY paying for them to get a REAL idea of what the prices are being listed and SOLD for. After all, you can list a Barbie for $1,000,000 with Free Shipping, it DOESN'T MEAN SOMEONE IS GOING TO PAY FOR IT. That is what this guide is for, to figure out what Dolls are going for NOW so you can ACTUALLY list and sell it for a fair price based on what someone is willing to PAY.

Things change as TIME goes on, all depending on how many were made/sold/defects all of it plays roles in the final price that is on TODAY'S market, and what a Barbie might cost you today, won't cost you tomorrow. There are a LOT of Barbies out there, especially the Holiday Barbie collection, things change all the time, more Barbies are made, others lost over time. As older things get older, their price value does increase, but sometimes 'how old' can be longer than you think. 10 Years or maybe even 100, only time will tell.

Just please remember, this is just a self help guide for people looking to sell, not a Blue Book

  58. Hello! Good blog, but actually you should rise the values and quotations, 'cause if you try to buy in ebay the dolls, they are higher. In any case, good work!

    1. I know how you feel on this, as do I. But it has to do with how many there are in the world verses the original demand for them. There are still so many, much like the beanie babies and baseball/football cards and all collections, when they are over produced, the overall value of them drops immensely
